A 286-Pound Champ Falls
Wrestling, has been a sport in Japan for 2,000 years.
Last week for the first time since 1939 two rice-fed
giants with the permanent rank of Yokozuna (grand champion) had reached
the final of the 15-day tournament for the Emperor's cup and there were
crowds on hand at Tokyo while thousands more watched on television or listened
to radios.
Tochinishiki weighed in at 286 pounds. His rival,
in the clay pit, Wakanohana, weighed in it 224 pounds. Sumo wrestlers attain
these weight by consuming quantities of rice, beer and sake, the Japanese
rice wine.
The idea of Sumo wrestling is to hoist your opponent
by his sash, bounce him on your belly and toss him out of the 15-foot ring,
or to make him touch the floor with any part of his body but his bare feet.
Wakanohana bellied Tochinishiki over the ropes in
a little more than a minute to claim the Emperor's cup which is almost
as big as he.
