Tochi-Waka Bout Will Decide Tournament Winner
OSAKA, Japan (UPI) - Grand champions Tochinishiki
and Wakanohana will battle Sunday for the championship in the final bout
of the 15-day sumo tournament here.
The rivals prepared for the closing scene by defeating
their opponents Saturday to remain undefeated after 14 days of the tournament.
Tochinishiki checked maegashira Fusanishiki's charge
and then defeated him with a powerful throw.
Ozeki Wakahaguro drove his left hand at Wakanohana's
throat and pushed hard with his right hand. He forced the yokozuna to the
edge of the ring when Wakanohana suddenly unleashed a powerful arm throw
and Wakahaguro went down on all fours.
Ozeki Kotogahama won his eighth bout against six
losses as he defeated sekiwake Kashiwado with the second of two quick successive
leg throws.
Tochihikari retained his komusubi position by forcing
sekiwake Annenyama out of the ring for his eighth win against six defeats.
It was Annenyama's ninth setback against five wins.
Low-charging Fujinishiki lost his komusubi rating
by suffering his eighth defeat against six wins. Sekiwake Kitabayama weathered
his attack and then downed him with an arm throw for his 10th victory against
four losses.
Maegashira Tokitsuyama had the best record after
Tochinishiki and Wakanohana by defeating maegashira Tsurugamine for his
12th win against two defeats. Tokitsuyama used his heavier weight to advantage.
