Tochi, Waka Win; Asashio Withdraws
OSAKA (UPI) - Yokozuna (grand champions) Tochinishiki
and Wakanohana won their 10th straight bouts Tuesday as they continued
setting the pace in the 15-day sumo tournament.
Supporters of 35-year-old Tochinishiki had a great
scare as he almost stepped out of the ring when strong sekiwake Annenyama
shifted his body as Tochinishiki charged in the day's final bout. Tochinishiki,
however, quickly regained his balance and attacked aggressively to drive
Annenyama out of the ring.
Wakanohana defeated 24-year-old sekiwake Kitabayama
for the sixth time but only after Kitabayama put up a great battle.
Wakanohana obtained a powerful hold on Kitabayama's
girdle with his two hands and lifted him high into the air in a bid to
deposit him out of the ring. Kitabayama, however, checked Wakanohana's
attempt and they grappled furiously for several seconds in the center of
the ring. Wakanohana then finally forced his opponent out of the ring.
Yokozuna Asashio, who suffered his fifth defeat
Monday against only four wins, withdrew from the tournament because of
an injured hip and knee. Ozeki Wakahagruro thereby was credited with a
win by forfeit for his sixth victory.
Fourth ranking maegashira Taiho, glamor boy of the
January tournament, won his first bout after four straight setbacks to
register his third win by defeating speedy fourth ranking maegashira Naruyama
with an arm throw.
Sekiwake Kashiwado, one of the most promising prospects
for a future yokozuna, won his sixth bout as he sent heavy first ranking
maegashira Dewanishiki flying out of the ring with one violent push with
his hands.
