Wakanohana Cops Thriller
OSAKA, Japan (UPI) - Thirty-one-year-old yokozuna
(grand champion) Wakanohana defeated 21-year-old sekiwake Kashiwado in
the most thrilling match Monday on the second day of the 15-day sumo tournament.
Kashiwado charged furiously at the outset and had
Wakanohana on the defensive. Wakanohana, however, turned the tide when
he slipped his favorite left arm through Kashiwado's defense and broke
Kashiwado's strong right hand hold on his girdle. Wakanohana then lifted
Kashiwado high into the air and deposited him outside of the ring.
Yokozuna Asashio, who disappointed his fans Sunday
by losing to komusubi Tochihikari, defeated 19-year-old fourth-ranking
maegashira Taiho without trouble.
Taiho appeared to have made a mistake in thinking
that a false start had been made and was pushed out without resisting.
Thirty-seven-year-old first ranking maegashira Kitanonada
upset ozeki (champion) Kotogahama in a hard fought bout.
Yokozuna Tochinishiki won his second straight match
as he easily disposed of fifth-ranking maegashira Tamanoumi.
