Tochi Clinches at Least a Tie
TOKYO (UPI) - Golf-playing grand champion Tochinishiki
clinched at least a tie for first place Saturday in the 15-day sumo tournament.
Tochinishiki defeated Wakahaguro for his 13th victory
against one defeat.
The tournament would end in a tie if Tochi lost
his Sunday match and Taiho, the sensational rookie, won his. A loss by
Taiho, who was handed his second loss Saturday by Tsurugamine, would give
Tochinishiki his 10th sumo crown.
The young Taiho became Japan's new idol by winning
11 straight bouts for a record in his, first competition in the top division.
Closest behind Tochinishiki and Taiho is Asashio
with an 11-3 record. The burly Asashio easily defeated Kotogahama Saturday.
Annenyama won his seventh bout against seven losses
when he threw Kashiwado out of the ring.
Kitabayama made his record 8-6 with a leg throw
over Dewanishiki.
