Kashiwado Squashes Taiho's Sumo Streak
TOKYO (UPI) -Rookie sumo wrestler Taiho, the "White Bear
of Hokkaido," suffered his first defeat Thursday after 11 straight wins.
Komusubi Kashiwado employed superior strategy as
he stopped Taiho's winning streak on the 12th day of the 15-day sumo tournament
at the Kokugikan. Arena.
Kashiwado quickly thrust his left arm through Taiho's
defense for a firm hold on Taiho's girdle. Kashiwado stuck his right arm
close to his body and prevented Taiho from slipping through his left arm
for a hold.

TAIHO TRIED AGAIN and again to get his left arm through
Kashiwado's defense but failed. Then as Taiho charged, Kashiwado pulled
fiercely with his arms and Taiho went down.
Nine special prizes of 10,000 yen ($27.80), each
from business firms, went to the winner of the featured bout.
Tochinishiki marched a step nearer to his 10th championship
by defeating Sekiwake Annenyama for his 12th straight win.
Tochinishiki is the only undefeated wrestler in
the Makuuchi or top division.
Annenyama defeated Tochinishiki in the past two
tournaments but he was no match for the grand champion this time. No sooner
had they stood up than Tochinishiki pushed with lightning speed and drove
Annenyama out of the ring without trouble.
Ozeki (champion) Wakahaguro, winner of the last
tournament, suffered his fourth defeat when small aggressive Wakanoumi
proved too fast for him and was pushed out of the ring.
Yokozuna (Tarzan) Asashio displayed herculean strength
as he sent sekiwake Kitabayama rolling onto the sand.
