Taiho Wins Record 11th Straight
TOKYO (UPI) - Maegashira Taiho made sumo history Wednesday
by registering his 11th straight win without a defeat in his first competition
in the Makuuchi or top division of the 15-day tournament.
Handsome Taiho broke the rookie record of 10 straight
victories, established 10 years ago by Chiyonoyama, by upsetting strong,
fourth-ranking maegashira Iwakaze.
Iwakaze, who had defeated Wakanohana for a major
upset on the opening day of the current tournament, attacked relentlessly
with his right arm and almost forced Taiho down on his knees.
Taiho, making a last-ditch stand, attempted an arm
throw, and the two wrestlers appeared to fall out of the ring together.
The referee ruled in Iwakaze's favor but was overruled by the judges, who
ordered an extra bout between the two grapplers.
In the new bout, Taiho checked Iwakaze's rashes.
He then grasped the lighter and smaller Iwakaze and pushed him out of the
ring.
Tochinishiki won his 11th straight bout as he leaped
quickly to the right side and with lightning speed drove Kitabayama out
of the ring.
Asashio suffered his third defeat and lost all chances
for the title by losing to Annenyama. When it appeared as if Asashio shoved
his opponent out, Annenyama pushed fiercely and Asashio fell out of the
ring first.
