Wakanohana Suffers 2nd Upset
TOKYO (UPI) - Yokozuna (grand champion) Wakanohana Monday
suffered his second straight defeat when he was upset by sekiwake Dewanishiki
on the second day of the year's first 15-day sumo tournament.
Dewanishiki used all of his 310 pounds to good advantage
by checking Wakanohana's spirited push and then lifted the yokozuna out
of the ring.
It was the first time in Wakanohana's career that
he had lost two straight bouts on the first two days of any tournament.
Veteran komusubi Tamanoumi pulled off the day's
other major upset by defeating ozeki (champion) Wakahaguro.
Tamanoumi, although handicapped by a bad left knee,
grasped Wakahaguro's neck, then pulled down with both hands and sent Wakahaguro
rolling on the sand.
Yokozuna Tochinishiki won his second straight bout
as he slapped hard-charging, fifth-ranking maegashira Wakamaeda with his
right hand and pushed him out of the ring.
Yokozuna (Tarzan) Asashio, who had stayed out of
the past three tournaments because of poor physical condition, demonstrated
giant strength by hurling first-ranking maegashira Tochihikari onto the
sand with one push.
