Wakanohana Upset As Tourney Opens

TOKYO (UPI) - Strong Iwakaze staged a major surprise Sunday by upsetting grand champion Wakanohana on the opening day of the year's first 15-day sumo tournament.
Wakanoumi, a stable mate of Wakanohana, tried desperately to defeat grand champion Tochinishiki in the final bout. The grand champion, however, wrestled carefully and pushed Wakanoumi out of the ring for an easy victory.
Grand champion Asashio, competing for the first time in four tournaments, made an auspicious start by defeating Naruyama. Asashio stayed out of the past three tournaments because of poor physical condition.

WAKAHAGURO, winner of the last tournament who will be promoted to grand champion if he wins the current one, had a narrow escape. He threw Fujinishiki when he was on the verge of being pushed out of the ring.
In the featured bout, 32-year-old Kotogahama wrestled cleverly and forced 21-year-old Kashiwado out of the ring. It was Kotogahama's first win over Kashiwado in three bouts.
Thirty-two-year-old Ohikari upset 24-year-old Kitabayama with a leg throw when it appeared as if the younger wrestler had a better hold and would beat him for the fourth straight time.
