Sekiwake Upsets Tochi

FUKUOKA, Japan (UPI) - Twenty-five-year-old sekiwake Annenyama sent 10,000 fans into a frenzy Thursday as he upset yokozuna (grand champion) Tochinishiki on the 12th day of the 15-day sumo tournament here.
Annenyama, who Wednesday threw yokozuna Wakanohana thereby not only registered his 10th win against two defeats, the same record with Wakanohana and Tochinishiki, but also established himself as the top candidate for the "shukunsho" or most meritorious award to the tournament competitors.
After two false starts, Tochinishiki charged as he tried to put his left arm through Annenyama's defense for his hold on his opponent's girdle. Annenyama, however, held his right arm close to his body and checked Tochinishiki from getting his favorite hold.
AS TOCHINISHIKI continued his attempt to get his left hand through Annenyama's defense, Annenyama pulled down strongly with both hands, and Tochinishiki went flying out of the ring.
Yokozuna Wakanohana, wrestling carefully because he has already been beaten twice, lifted sekiwake Kitabayama high into the air and deposited him outside the ring for a comparatively easy victory.
Ozeki (champion) Wakahaguro and 11th-ranking Maegashira Fujinishiki won their bouts to lead in the race for the championship, with only one defeat against 11 victories.
