Waka Pulls Into Lead In Sumo Tourney

TOKYO (UPI) - Grand champion Wakanohana took the lead Thursday in the autumn 15-day sumo tournament by defeating sekiwake Wakahaguro.
Wakanohana and Wakahaguro were the only wrestlers with one defeat before Thursday's bouts among the 44 contestants in the "makuuchi" or top division.
The 24-year-old Wakahaguro, who had defeated Wakanohana for the first time in the July tournament after 16 successive defeats, put up a good fight, but he was unable to break though the grand champion's strong defense.

WAKANOHANA wrestled carefully and prevented the heavy Wakahaguro from getting a good pushing position. Then he obtained a body hold and pushed Wakahaguro out of the ring.
.Grand champion Tochinishiki and 15th-ranking maegashira Atagoyama won their bouts Thursday and along with Wakahaguro have 10-2 records.
Tochinishiki charged fast and drove komusubi Kitabayama out of the ring in a matter of seconds.
Atagoyama attacked fiercely with both hands and defeated strong second-ranking maegashira Dewanishiki. Big Dewanishiki never had a chance when he failed to get a hold on his opponent's girdle.
