Tochi Wins 24th Straight for Record
TOKYO (UPI) - Grand champion Tochinishiki set a postwar
record of 24 straight wins Monday by easily defeating second ranking maegashira
Tamahibiki for his ninth victory in the 15-day autumn sumo tournament here.
Grand champion Wakanohana, who trailed Tochinishiki
with a 7-1 record before Monday's bout, pulled down with his arms and quickly
disposed of low-charging first-ranking maegashira Iwakaze.
The 15th ranking maegashira, Atagoyama, matched
Tochinishiki's clean slate in the tournament by pushing fiercely to beat
fourth-ranking maegashira Naruyama for an upset. Naruyama had registered
the tournament's biggest surprise thus far by defeating Wakanohana.
Sekiwake Wakahaguro, who is a candidate for ozeki
(champion), won his eighth bout against one loss as he drove third ranking
maegashira Fujinishiki out of the ring.
Wakahaguro and Wakanohana, both with 8-1 records,
trail Tochinishiki and Atagoyama.
