Favorites Score Wins In Sumo
TOKYO (UPI) - Thirty-four-year-old second ranking
maegashira Dewanishiki pushed hard and scored an upsetting win Monday over
ozeki (champion) Kotogahama in the second day bout of the 15-day Sumo Tournament.
It was Kotogahama's second defeat in two days and
he was thereby virtually eliminated as a candidate for the title. He was
upset by fifth-ranking maegashira, Shionishiki.
Yokozuna (grand champion) Tochinishiki, who is shooting
for his second straight championship, barely saved himself from defeat
by executing a neck throw to triumph over third ranking maegashira Iwakaze.
The 25-year-old Iwakaze got a good hold and almost pushed the 34-year-old
yokozuna out of the ring.
Yokozuna Wakanohana also had a big scare when only
his amazing strength in his legs prevented first-ranking maegashira Tsurugamine
from shoving him out of the ring. Staving off Tsurugamine's desperate drive,
Wakanohana pulled down with his arms and finally forced his opponent out
of the ring for victory.
