Asashio Stops Tochi's Win Streak

OSAKA, Japan (UPI) - Twenty-nine-year-old ozeki (champion) Asashio sent 10,000 spectators into a frenzy Friday as he ended 34-year-old yokozuna (grand champion) Tochinishiki's winning streak on the 13th day of the current 15-day sumo tournament.
Asashio, nicknamed "Tarzan" because of his giant strength, kept himself in the running for the title by pushing Tochinishiki out of the ring for his 11th victory in 13 bouts.
Tochinishiki attacked aggressively but the stronger Asashio grasped Tochinishiki's girdle with his right hand and then started charging. He drove Tochinishiki to the edge of the ring.

TOCHINISHIKI tried to save himself but Asashio pushed powerfully with his left arm and forced Tochinishiki out of the ring.
Wakanohana, the 31-year-old yokozuna, once again emerged as the top favorite to win his third straight tournament by throwing 28-year-old sekiwake Wakamaeda for his 12th win and only one loss, sharing the top position with Tochinishiki.
Kashiwado, 13th-ranking maegashira, finally suffered his second defeat in 13 days at the hands of veteran 36-year-old first-ranking maegashira Kitanonada. As Kashiwado, 21, charged fiercely, Kitanonada lifted him and tossed him backward out of the ring.
