Asashio Loses 2nd In Osaka Sumo Meet
OSAKA, Japan (UPI) - Twenty-nine-year-old ozeki (champion)
Asashio, who took a bride last month, virtually lost another chance Thursday
for promotion to yokozuna (grand champion) in the current 15-day Sumo tournament
by suffering his second defeat in five days.
Tsurugamine, 29, fourth-ranking maegashira, who
almost defeated yokozuna Wakanohana Wednesday, outsmarted Asashio by charging
with lightning speed to push his stronger opponent out of the ring.
Tochinishiki, 34-year-old yokozuna, won his fifth
straight victory but almost erred in his strategy against third-ranking,
maegashira Annenyama.

TOCHINISHIKI leaped to the right at the start of the
bout as Annenyama came in charging low. Tochinishiki attempted to get hold
of Annenyama's girdle with his right arm and execute an arm throw.
Annenyama, however, checked Tochinishiki's attack,
thrust his arms through Tochinishiki's defense and began pushing. But before
he could push Tochinishiki out of the ring, he executed a quick arm throw
and Annenyama fell onto the sand ahead of him.
Yokozuna Wakanohana duplicated Tochinishiki's strategy
successfully against fourth-ranking maegashira Kitabayama. Wakanohana executed
an arm throw to win in less than three seconds for his fifth straight.

ONLY THREE other wrestlers besides Tochinishiki and
Wakanohana remained undefeated among the 50 contestants in the top "Maku
Uchi" division. They are:
- 13th-ranking maegashira Kashiwado, formerly known as Togashi, who
Thursday defeated Yoshinomine.
- 10th-ranking maegashira Atagoyama who pushed out the tough 35-year-old
maegashira Kiryugawa.
- Komusubi, 24-year-old Wakahaguro of Yokohama, who pushed out third-ranking
maegashira Wakanoumi who previously had defeated Asashio.
Fifth-ranking maegashira Oginohana attacked aggressively
and pushed out 19-year-old komusubi Wakachichibu for an upset victory.
It was Wakachichibu's fourth defeat in five days.
