Wakanohana Loses 1st, Asashio Still in Running

TOKYO (UPI) - Tough 33-year-old sekiwake Tokitsuyama sent 10,000 fans into a frenzy Friday as he upset 30-year-old yokozuna grand champion) Wakanohana and prevented him from clinching he 15-day sumo tournament.
Wakanohana, who had gone undefeated up to Friday's bout with 12 victories, needed only one more win to capture his fifth sumo championship as his closest contenders had already tasted three defeats with only three days remaining in the tournament.
Wakanohana was an overwhelming favorite to beat Tokitsuyama who had already lost five bouts.

THEY GRASPED each other on the girdle to be on equal terms. But Tokitsuyama, weighing 288 pounds against Wakanohana's 231, lifted his lighter opponent and whirled him around.
Wakanohana prevented himself from being thrown. But Tokitsuyama continued to attack trying to push Wakanohana out of the ring. As Wakanohana unleashed all his strength to check the drive, Tokitsuyama quickly executed a powerful arm throw and Wakanohana kissed the sand for his first defeat in the current tournament.
Wakanohana must now defeat strong 29-year-old ozeki (champion) Asashio Saturday if he expects to clinch the tournament title before the final day Sunday.
Asashio defeated 33-year-old yokozuna Tochinishiki with a powerful arm throw for his 10th win against three losses. It was Tochinishiki's fourth defeat in 13 bouts.
