19-Year-Old Sumoist Upsets Strongman
FUKUOKA, Japan (UPI) - Nineteen-year-old Wakachichibu
stole the show Tuesday on the third day of the 15-day official sumo tournament
by defeating strong Shinobuyama of the sekiwake rank for a major upset.
Wakachichibu, who may set a record for speediest
promotion to sumo's highest rank of Yokozuna (grand champion) because this
is only his second tournament in the top makuuchi division, received an
ovation from a sellout crowd of more than 10,000 at the indoor Sports Center
arena.
Making good use of his 290 pounds, Wakachichibu
charged, preventing the clever Shinobuyama from getting a good hold on
him, and forced him out of the ring.
