Kagamisato Wins Trophy

Grand Champion Kagamisato gives a million-dollar smile after winning the Emperor's Trophy.


    Grand Champion Kagamisato became the winner of the Emperor's Trophy for two consecutive  times as he downed Tsurugamine in the deciding bout on the 15th and the final day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tourney Sunday before an overflowing crowd of 12,000.
    The tourney, which was held at Tokyo's Kuramae Kokugikan Arena, saw Kagamisato and Tsurugamine tie at a record of 14 wins against one loss, as Tsurugamine won over Tochihikari on Sunday.
    It was the first time since last spring that a deciding match had to be held. In the deciding bout the 340-pounder Kagamisato easily overpowered his lower-ranking training partner.
    Kagamisato, 33-year-old father of a son and a daughter, was then crowned for the third time since he began his ring career.
    Besides the Emperor's Trophy, Kagamisato was given the Pan American Airways' Championship Trophy, a 75-pound winged globe mounted an a wooden base which was awarded by William Ortwin, PAA's district traffic and sales manager who appeared clad in kimono.
    In the meantime, Shukunsho (outstanding wrestler's award) was given to Naruyama, Ginosho (performance award) to Tsurugamine and a Kantosho (efforts award) to Shimizugawa.
    A life-size photograph in color of the last season's Champion Kagamisato was presented by the Mainichi Newspapers. The photograph will be hung an the wall of the arena.
