KAGAMISATO SUFFERS TOURNEYS 1ST DEFEAT

The sensational Ozeki (second ranking) Wakanohana
Thursday proved that a good little man can beat a good big man in Japan's
traditional sumo sport of muscular giants.
Yielding 130 pounds weight advantage, the 223-pound
wrestler in a superlative show of herculean strength and extraordinary
skill hurled 355-pound Grand Champion Kagamisato onto the sandy circular
ring to topple his foe from the ranks of the undefeated on the 12th day
of the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament at the Kuramae Kokugikan, Tokyo.
The defeat of Kagamisato left the tourney without
a high ranking contestant with a perfect slate. He is now tied with Tsurugamine
with an 11-1 record. Wakanohana by virtue of his spectacular victory has
a 10-2 mark.
Tochinishiki, another Yokozuna, suffered his fourth setback as he fell
victim to Tokitsuyama.
Meanwhile, Japan Sumo Association officials began
studying possibilities of using photographs to determine the true winners
of close bouts as in photo finishes of horse races. Pictures of Wednesday's
match between Wakanohana and Yoshibayama clearly showed that the former
won instead of the latter who was awarded the bout by judges.
