‘Yokozuna’ Kagamisato Wins Fall Sumo Tourney

Mighty Kagamisato, 350 pound “Yokozuna” ranking wrestler, became the champion of the Annual fall tournament of the Japan Professional Sumo Association, defeating another “Yokozuna” Chiyonoyama on the 15th and the final day of the 15 day sports classic Sunday at the Kuramae Kokugikan Tokyo.
Kagamisato won the coveted Emperor's Cup, and the Pan American Airways trophy and many other Sumo honors by garnering 14 wins against only one defeat.
Leading runners-up were “Sekiwake” ranking Matsunobori (13-2) and Dewanishiki (12-3).
Matsunobori’s victory over his fellow “Sekiwake” Wakanohana practically ensured his elevation to the “Ozeki” rank, the rank next to “Yokozuna,” although Wakanohana is still given a chance at the promotion parley to be held later on.
Other awards included “Shukunsho” (outstanding wrestler's award) which was presented to Matsunobori, “Ginosho” (performance award) given to Wakanohana, and “Kantosho” (efforts award) given to Dewanishiki.
A capacity crowd of over 10,000 cheering fans watched the final day bouts. The tourney was marred by the absence of “Yokozuna” Tochinishiki, the defending champion.
One of the evening's top thrillers was the battle of the giants between “Yokozuna” Yoshibayama (310 pounds) and “Ozeki” Ouchiyama (360 pounds). After much pushing and pulling to thunderous applause, Yoshibayama gained a hard won victory by shoving out Ouchiyama out of the ring.
