Summer Sumo Meet Opens
Grand Champion Chiyonoyama (left) throws Shimanishiki
for an opening day victory Sunday of the professional sumo tourney in Tokyo.
Grand Champion Yoshibayama and leading grappler
Matsunobori went down to upset defeats that highlighted the opening of
the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at the Kokugikan Arena, Kuramae,
Asakusa, Tokyo.
The other three Yokozunas - Chiyonoyama, Tochinishiki
and Kagamisato - came through with flying colors, disposing of their opponents
in Grand Champion style.
Still nursing a foot injury sustained during a practice
bout with gigantic Ouchiyama, Yoshibayama was rather handily thrust down
by up-and-coming Wakamaeda, while Matsunobori was dumped by Hajimayama.
Results of other main bouts:
Tokitsuyama beat Shinobuyama

Annenyama beat Wakanohana
