OSAKA, Mar. 14. - Two major upsets highlighted the
ninth day of Grand Spring Professional Sumo Tourney when two undefeated
"Sekiwake" grapplers - Ouchiyama, 6 feet 7, 316 pounds, and Wakanohana,
5 feet 9, 208 pounds - bit the dirt in two consecutive bouts at the Osaka
Prefectural Gymnasium, Namba, Monday.
In the first big card of the day, popular Asashio,
6 feet 3, 278 pounds, with a fine 6-2 record smashed square against Wakanohana
and toppled him after a heated tussle.
A few minutes later the fans went wild with excitement
as Ouchiyama suffered his first setback at the hands of Shinobuyama, 5
feet 8, 216 pounds, in a short breathtaking contest.
Grand Champion Chiyonoyama maintained his perfect
record, defeating Tokitsuyama, 5 feet 9, 279 pounds, in a convincing performance.
Another pot-bellied Grand Champion, Kagamisato,
who has been in poor shape in the current tourney with four wins and four
defeats was absent from the ring due to acute nephritis.
Meanwhile, Juryo ranking Bishyuzan, 35, Monday announced
his retirement from the ring.
