CHIYONOYAMA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP IN NEW YEAR'S SUMO TOURNAMENT

    Top Yokozuna-ranking Chiyonoyama Sunday was crowned champion of the 15-day New Year's Sumo Tournament to win the Emperor's cup as he beat 277-pound Tokitsuyama before a capacity crowd at the Kokugikan, Tokyo.
    On the final day of the tourney, the extra bout was necessitated when the two were tied for the top spot with 12 victories and three defeats at the close of regular scheduled program.
    It was the fourth Tournament championship for the 28 year old Chiyonoyama, hailing from Hokkaido, and the first since he was promoted to Yokozuna in 1951.
    Minutes earlier, in the last scheduled event of the tourney card, Chiyo overpowered 354-pound Yokozuna Kagamisato to win the right to meet Toki in the decisive match
    Tokitsuyama, who was honored with the Inspirational Award for his fighting spirit that carried him to the finals, preserved his record of three defeats by overcoming Ohikari in his all-important bout.
    Asashio, No. 5 man of the West team, conqueror of three Yokozunas - Yoshibayama, Chiyonoyama and Tochinishiki - was named the Outstanding wrestler of the meet, and Komusubi (fourth rank) Shinobuyama, winner of his last five matches, including one over Yokozuna Kagamisato, was cited for his fine technique.
    Besides the Emperor's Trophy Chiyonoyama was recipient of the championship pennant from former Yokozuna Futabayama, a large painting of himself from the Mainichi Newspapers and the handsome Pan American World Airways Championship Trophy.
    Trailing Chiyonoyama and Tokitsuyama were Sekiwake-ranking Ouchiyama with 11 wins and four defeat and Yokozuna Tochinishiki and Kagamisato, Odachi and Onobori with 10-5 records.
