I noticed that the wrestlers all wore fancy hairdos.
The ornateness of the hairdo having a direct correlation to the rank of
the wrestler. The real novices are almost shaved bald, less novice have
fuzzy mops and the slightly more advanced novices have enough hair to tie
in a knot. It seems that Sumo wrestlers don't like barbers, for they never
go get their hair cut once they become wrestlers.
The chonmage hairdo looks something like a doorknob
and probably is there to give something for the other wrestler to grab
on to so he can swing him like door. Kuri-mage looks like something an
old Oba-san wears and some of the old Oba-sans I've seen would make good
Sumo wrestlers.
The O-icho-mage is really something, though. But
I can't figure it out! Does the wrestler get to wear this fancy hair-do
because he's a good wrestler or does he get the reputation for being a
good wrestler because he spends so much time fixing his hair, that when
he gets in the ring and the other wrestler musses his hair he gets angry
and smashes him around ?
I met a big fellow on the way the arena. He said
he had a greater reputation as a Sumo until he had a horrible thing happen.
He went bald and, as he couldn't thus wear a fancy hairdo, no one could
tell what a great wrestler he was, and he retired broken hearted.
