Sumo Results

    One of the most favored Sumo wrestler Ouchiyama finally lost to Hajimayama on the sixth day of the current tournament making Grand Champion Chiyonoyama and Yoshibayama the only holders of clean records to date.
    Friday's top news in Sumo enthusiasts was that Chiyonoyama became a father of a baby girl. He happily said "nothing like being a father ...."
    Starting the same day, 62 newcomers enrolled in each training quarters competed their strength on the official ring to be the "future great."

Results of the day's main events were as follows:

Wakanohana beat Kitanonada
Hajimayama beat Ouchiyama,
Tochinishiki beat Kuninobori
Mitsuneyama beat Orochigata

    The whole feeling of a theater is further accentuated when the wrestlers come out. With the announcer singing opera fashion at the top of lungs, the two wrestlers look even more like heroines from Wagnerian opus what with their odd, effeminate hair-do's and well developed waist lines.
    If this isn't enough, then what clinches it is the dance routine the twosome break into. Surprisingly, the "singer" stops and leaves the dancers to their own. They showed their skill by continuing without accompaniment and keeping in almost perfect unison - they would be welcome additions to Komaki's ballet. Down they sloop in perfect, if ponderous, pliee; up again and out go a log each in matching extensions, left; then right; pliee then rise again, whirl and exit, whirl, reenter in a "here we go gathering nuts in May" routine that I soon see is really sprinkling salt.
    This they do several times, going thru several pounds of salt. I figure it is because the ring is not high enough and they want to raise it up a few inches with salt. Or, they could be preparing for any eventuality by seasoning the dirt one may later be forced to eat.
    Then the dancing stops and the salt throwing stops and a great drum booms and I figure at last there'll be some music and this will be opera after all. But again I am disappointed, for the wrestling has started - the low "boom" was not a drum - it was the sound of the stomachs of the two wrestlers colliding:
