AUTUMN SUMO TOURNEY OPENS

Shinobuyama downs Yokozuna Azumafuji in one of the big upsets on the first day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament Sunday.

- UPSETS MARK 1ST DAY -

"Yokozuna" Azumafuji and "Ozekis," defending champion Tochinishiki and Mitsuneyama, hit the dust in startling upsets as the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament to last 15 days opened Sunday before a capacity sweltering throng of rabid Sumo enthusiasts at the Kokugikan arena at Kuramae, Asakusa, Tokyo.
Azumafuji was toppled by Shinobuyama, Tochinishiki dropped his match to Miyanishiki, while Mitsuneyama was hurtled to the ground by Tokitsuyama in inauspicious starts.
During the traditional colorful ceremonies, Tochinishiki, winner of the previous tourney, returned the titular Emperor's Cup and pennant to Dewanoumi and Tokitsukaze, chairmen of the Japan Professional Sumo Association, and the PAA trophy to William H.B Ortwin of Pan American.

Results of other main event follow:
Wakasegawa beat Kotonishiki

At last I was to see the Sumo and find out just what it is! We were almost at the arena and whirled around a corner in the kogata when the tiny cab swerved violently to avoid being hit by a man bigger than the taxi. I was told, “That's a Sumo wrestler.” Perhaps Tokyo should have more pedestrians that size to tame the taxi drivers.
Just as we got there, I heard thunder overhead. This didn't make sense as the sun was shining. “That's not thunder,” I was told, “It's a drum announcing the opening of the bouts.” The tower where the drums it was pointed out to me. It was a bit hard to hear it clearly over the noise of the traffic and I think with so much westernized so that more people could hear the opening herald. Replace the old-fashioned drum with a modern one from a jazz band. The jazz band idea isn't so revolutionary, as when the Sumo season opened I saw a little Japanese-style marching around town and was told they were announcing the opening of the Sumo bouts.
With every other type of advertising in Japan taking to the air (probably because there isn't any room left on the ground), I was surprised to see that the little touring band hadn't been replaced by an airplane with a loudspeaker. Of course, they could also replace the drum tower with an illuminated advertising balloon. To keep everything traditional, shape the balloon like a Sumo wrestler. Better yet, as old Sumo wrestlers are given all the odd jobs around the stadium, maybe, they could just take an old Sumo wrestler, tie a string to his nose and fill him full of hydrogen.
It would be quite a novelty.
