Mitsuneyama Takes Trophy As Sumo Closes

Mitsuneyama grins happily on winning the championship Emperor's Trophy in the Spring Grand Professional Sumo Tournament at Osaka at the close of the 15-day tourney Saturday.

    OSAKA, Mar. 20 . – “Ozeki” Mitsuneyama captured the first championship in his 17 year ring career by defeating another “Ozeki” Tochinishiki on the last day of the Spring Grand Professional Sumo Tournament which wound up at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, Namba, Saturday.
    He completed the “storm-ridden” 15-day tourney with a record of 12 wins and three defeats to win the coveted Emperor's Trophy.
    It was the third time in the traditional sumo history that a thrice-defeated wrestler won the championship.
    In addition to the Emperor's Trophy and the championship flag, the new sumo king received a framed picture from the Mainichi Newspapers.
    After the match, Mitsuneyama said, “I was very fortunate to cop the crown and I shall never forget today.”
    Three “Maegashira” wrestlers, Kuninobori (9 wins and 6 defeats), Daitenryu (11 wins and 4 defeats) and Wakasegawa (9 wins and 6 defeats) were awarded prizes for their outstanding performances in the current tourney.
