Chiyo Bites Dust In Sumo Tourney
Fast-charging Matsunobori, out to regain the ranking
he lost last autumn, upset Grand Champion Chiyonoyama on the seventh day
of the current Japan Professional Sumo Tournament at the Kuramae Kokugikan
Stadium Saturday.
It was the first black mark against the “Yokozuna”
leaving only two undefeated sumo wrestlers in the 49 man list of “nakairi”
qualifiers. Only 360 pound Kagamisato, another Grand Champion ranking giant,
and “Ozeki” ranking Yoshibayama now hold unblemished records.
Sunday the doughy Matsunobori is matched against
Kagamisato in a match which may virtually decide the championship at the
halfway mark.
The list of all winning wrestlers took a beating
on Saturday as low-rated Shimanishiki also bit the dust.
Results of Saturday's leading bouts:
Matsunobori over Chiyonoyama
Kagamisato over Asashio
Yoshibayama over Shionishiki
Tamanoumi over Tochinishiki
Mitsuneyama over Orochigata
Tokitsuyama over Hajimayama
Wakanohana over Kuninobori
Shimizugawa over Dewanishiki
Ouchiyama over Kotonishiki
Odachi over Kotogahama
Nariyama over Terunobori
