The ancient Japanese grunt and groan ring sport
of Sumo will again enter the limelight of spectator sport interest in Tokyo,
Sunday, January 10, when the annual 15 day New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament
opens at the Kuramae Kokugikan.
Capacity throngs of enthusiasts will be making the
daily trek to the circular arena in the Asakusa district, while millions
will be viewing the 300 pound grapplers in action by television or listening
to the radio announcer's accounts.
Well conditioned by their recent performances in
rural areas, all contestants are primed to offer spectators programs of
enjoyable, hard-fought matches.
Yokozuna-class Chiyonoyama and Azumafuji and Ozeki-class
Yoshibayama are given the best chances of copping the tourney title by
experts who have seen some of the topflight men in their final workouts.
