Pro-Sumo Tournament Slated From Jan. 14
TOKYO, Jan. 12 - Ushering in the 1951 sumo season,
the traditional sumo tournament will open Sunday, January 14, to last for
15 days at the new Kokugikan ring, Asakusa, Tokyo, with the participation
of all wrestlers including three "yokozuna" on the roster of the Japan
Sumo Association.
Attention of fans is centered on whether "yokozuna"
Terukuni, champion of the 1950 autumn tourney, will be able to defend his
title.
But pre-tourney dopesters pick Azumafuji, "yokozuna"
and captain of the West team, as the most promising grappler to win the
individual championship. He is reportedly in top shape, weighing 385 pounds
- the heaviest among the wrestlers in Japan.
