With the 15 day summer main professional sumo tournament entering its second half, two of the three "yokozuna" wrestlers, Haguroyama and Azumafuji, are maintaining their undefeated record since the first day of the tourney, which opened on May 14 at the temporary Kokugikan at Asakusa Kuramae, Tokyo.
Another grand champion Terukuni suffered his first defeat on the fifth day when he was toppled by Mitsuneyama, "maegashira," who shone on the previous day, by beating Chiyonoyama, "ozeki," one of the most promising contenders for the individual championship.
On May 19, Kamikaze, fighting "maegashira" of the Nishogaseki Club, suddenly tendered his resignation from the ring due to his poor showing since the opening of the current tourney. The resignation was later accepted by the Japan Sumo Association.
