Sumo Grand Champs May Be Demoted
(Kyodo). TOKYO, Jan. 21 - A merit system under which
a Grand Champion can be demoted has been adopted by the Sumo Association.
Hitherto a sumo wrestler once attaining the Grand Champion rank held it
permanently until his retirement.
At a meeting of officers Friday at 10 a.m., the
Sumo Association decided to recognize a system which provided that a Grand
Champion should be degraded on his showings in the tournaments.
Criticism was raised against the present system,
not only by the sumo fans but also by the progressive elements within the
Sumo Association. The situation was brought to the fore when all three
grand Champions announced their decision to "sit out" the current spring
tournament.
Formal approval of the new system will be made on
January 29, the last day of the current tournament, after working out details
for the revolutionary change.
