Tourney Slated At Sumo Arena

    HQ., RYCOM - The All-Okinawan sumo championship tournament will be held Dec. 4, at the sumo arena of Tsuboya, Naha City, Uruma Shimpo, an Okinawan daily, announced recently. This tournament is sponsored by the Uruma Shimpo.
    In the game of sumo, which is parallel in many respects to wrestling, two representative champions from eight districts throughout the island will participate. In addition, each district will be represented by another team composed of five champions. The former group will be the combatants in individual championship matches, at the conclusion of which they will be tested in the elimination tourney among the team groups.
    For the selection of representative champions from each district, a preliminary elimination tourney was held in each district to insure obtaining the foremost sumo challengers available.
    The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with the championship bout taking place late in the afternoon.
    Sumo, a sport which has been developed through a period of centuries in the Orient, has now become the primary and most popular sport among native Ryukyuans.
