HE SHOULDA STOOD IN BED

But Mat Star Who Went to Ball Quits Job to Save Face

OSAKA, Oct. 24 (AP) - Kanematsu Maedayama, one of Japan's four top sumo wrestlers, quit the mat today - after playing hookey to see a baseball game.
He was banned from a sumo tournament for ducking a match to see the San Francisco Seals play an exhibition baseball game in Tokyo. He said he couldn't wrestler that day because he was ill.
The excuse backfired. He was seen at the baseball park. A Photographer snapped him shaking hands with Seals' manager Frank (Lefty) O'Doul.
Maedayama went back to Osaka after the game and said he was sorry - please to forgive? Nothing doing, said the stern officials. He would have to stand a formal hearing on his behavior.
Rather than do that and "lose face," the baseball-loving groaner quit.
