Chiyonoyama Wins Osaka Sumo Tourney

    By winning 13 of the 15 bouts, Chiyonoyama, "ozeki," realized his long cherished ambition of of capturing the coveted championship in the autumn main professional sumo tournament, which wound up Sunday, October 23, at the specially constructed Kokugikan, Fukushima, Osaka.
    On the last day of the 15 day competition, Chiyonoyama defeated Kamikaze.
    In the final bout, Haguroyama, "yokozuna," suffered his third defeat in the current tourney, thus yielding the crown to Chiyonoyama.




Maedayama Retires

    Maedayama, "yokozuna" sumo champion, has retired from the wrestling ring. His application to retire made to the Japan Sumo Association Sunday, October 23, was accepted by directors.
    Maedayama was forbidden Saturday to appear in the remainder of the Osaka main tournament, when brought to a close Sunday. This was the first time that a champion of "yokozuna" rank had been given such an order.
    Before absenting himself and going to Tokyo, Maedayama's record in the Osaka tournament had been one win, five defeats.
