Sumo Tourney Opens
All Leading Wrestlers In Osaka Tournament
The 15 day autumn main professional sumo tournament
opened at the specially constructed Kokugikan, Dojima Ohashi, Fukushima-ku,
Osaka, Sunday, October 9, with attention centered on whether Masuiyama
"ozeki," will be able to defend his championship.
This is the second official tourney in Osaka, the
first having been held last fall.
The current competition is being participated in
by all the leading wrestlers on the roster of the Japan Sumo Association
including four "yokozuna" - Terukuni, Haguroyama, Maedayama and Azumafuji
- and three "ozeki" - Masuiyama, Chiyonoyama and Saganohana.
Heaviest among the grapplers is Azumafuji, who weighs
368 pounds, followed by Terukuni, 336 pounds.
