Spring Sumo Meet
13 Day Tokyo Matches Will Commence Today
TOKYO, Jan. 11 - The official spring tournament
of the Japan Professional Sumo Association will open Wednesday, January
12, at the temporary Kokugikan ring in Hamacho Park, Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
Particular attention will be paid by the fans to
the performances of the new grand champion "yokozuna" Azumafuji, who will
probably be the biggest wrestler of the tourney, weighing 373 pounds.
Favorites for the championship in the coming 13
day competition include Azumafuji, Masuiyama and Saganohana although such
veterans as Maedayama, Chiyonoyama and Kamikaze are reported to be in good
condition.
Special seats are reserved for Allied personnel.
It is expected that the meet will draw the largest crowds since the end
of the war.
