Sumo Tourney to Start
The grueling 13 day spring sumo tournament will begin
today at the temporary stadium built in Hamacho Park, Nihonbashi, on the
banks of the Sumida River.
Mammoth sumo wrestlers finished their preparatory
training and will be gunning for perfect records.
The spring tournament will be held for the first
time in 6 years.
A sumo ring festival was held yesterday morning
paving the way for the competition from 10 a.m. today.
Interest will be focused on the showing of the new
Grand Champion, Azumafuji, who is the first top rank wrestler to come to
the fore from Tokyo in years. Grand Champion Maedayama will also be participating,
but Grand Champions Terukuni and Haguroyama are sitting this tournament
out.
The matches will be held daily from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. until January 24.
