Sumo Ranking Announced
The new rankings for the 1949 spring sumo tournament
to start on January 12 were announced yesterday and named four Grand Champions
- Terukuni, Haguroyama, Maedayama and Azumafuji. The last named is a newcomer
to the highest sumo rank.
Masuiyama and Saganohana were listed as Champions
while Chiyonoyama and Shionoumi were ranked as "sekiwake" (next in rank
to Champion). In the next rank, the "komusubi" were named Kamikaze and
Rikidozan.
The spring tourney will run for 13 days until January
24.
The matches will be held at the temporary sumo stadium
built at the Hamacho Park in Nihombashi on the banks of the Sumida River.
