SPORTS SUMMARY
Summer Sumo Tournament Starts
If you felt the ground shaking out towards Meiji
Shrine ways yesterday, don't be alarmed. It was only Japan's mammoth top-knotted
wrestling throwing each other around in the annual 11 day summer tournament.
The wrestlers, some weighing 300 pounds, began the grueling matches yesterday.
Sumo fans this year will miss the performances of
two Grand Champions, Haguroyama and Maedayama. Haguroyama, who won last
year's autumn tourney is out with an injured heal, while Maedayama suffered
acute gastro-enteritis on the eve of the tournament beginning.
Terukuni will be the only Grand Champion performing.
The matches yesterday started at 10 a.m., but was
called off at 12.30 p.m. because of rain.
