Sumo Tournament Opens Today At Meiji Shrine
TOKYO, May 12. - The 11 day summer main tournament
of the Dai Nippon Sumo Association will be opened Thursday, May 13, at
the sumo ring in the outer garden of the Meiji Shrine here.
Grand champion Haguroyama, who won the spring main
tourney, will absent himself from the current competition due to an injury
suffered in his right leg.
As a result of Haguroyama's absence, Azumafuji,
chubby "ozeki," is confident of setting a good record in the individual
competition in an effort to become a "yokozuna" grappler.
Among the other leading promising candidates for
the individual championship are such high ranking wrestlers as Maedayama,
Terukuni, Saganohana, Chiyonoyama and Shionoumi.
Admission including tax is ¥150 for A class
reserved seat, ¥120 for B class reserved seat, ¥75 for first class
seat and ¥40 general admission.
