Giant Sumo Wrestlers To Meet Sports Writers In Baseball Game Jan. 21
With attention centered on whether hefty sumo wrestlers
will be able to display the same mighty power in baseball, the Japan Professional
Sumo Association IX will cross bats with the Kansai Sports Writers' Club
team in an open baseball game at the spacious Nishinomiya stadium between
Osaka and Kobe January 21 at 1 p.m.
The wrestlers' baseball team includes Maedayama,
new "yokozuna," and Kamikaze, "sekiwake," both known as baseball lovers
in professional sumodom.
The sports writers' squad will be represented by
Yoshio Yuasa, former ace moundsman of Meiji University, and other ex-baseballers
of the Tokyo "Big Six" Loop.
Pro Sumo At Nishinomiya
Participated in by all three "yokozuna" wrestlers
and all others on the roster of the Japan Professional Sumo Association,
the Kansai sumo tournament will be held for 11 days beginning January 22
at the specially constructed ring on the Nishinomiya grounds between Osaka
and Kobe.
With the support of the Hyogo Prefectural Peace
Maintenance Collaboration Society, the sumo tourney will be jointly sponsored
by the Hyogo prefectural branch of the Doho Engo Kai, a welfare society,
and the Japan Professional Sumo Association.
