Sumo Matches End

Haguroyama Retains Title; East Squad 123, West 84

TOKYO, June 13. - Haguroyama, "yokozuna" and captain of the East team, won his fourth successive victory in the official tourney of the Japan Professional Sumo Association by thrusting out Maedayama, formidable 'ozeki," in the finals of the 10 day summer main sumo tournament which wound up at the Meiji Shrine sumo ring here this afternoon.
In the inter-team competition, the East camp overwhelmed the West squad by the lop-sided score of 123 points to 84.
By winning nine out of their respective matches, four leading grapplers - Haguroyama, Maedayama, Azumafuji and Rikidozan - tied for the top position, as a result of which a playoff was staged to decide the winner for the first time since the inauguration of the sumo association.
Maedayama toppled Azumafuji, another "ozeki" of the West team, while Haguroyama threw down Rikidozan, "maegashira" of the East squad, in the first round of the playoff. Accordingly, Haguroyama and Maedayama staged a bitterly and hard fought tussle in the finals, but victory finally went to the defending champion.

The results of the leading bouts on the last day were:

Okuma pushed out Fudoiwa
Sakuranishiki pushed out Midorishima
Kashiwado threw down Wakasegawa
Kusunishiki toppled Itsutsuumi
Shionoumi threw down Terunobori
Azumafuji toppled Kamikaze
Maedayama threw down Saganohana
Haguroyama thrust out Terukuni
