Rankings Announced For Sumo Wrestlers
TOKYO, May 26. - The Japan Sumo Association announced
the new rankings for professional wrestlers on the roster of the association
prior to the opening of the summer main sumo tourney scheduled June 1 at
the sumo ring in the compounds of the Meiji Shrine here.
In the new East squad (headed by Haguroyama, "yokozuna"
or grand champion in Japanese sumodom), Kamikaze, "komusubi," has been
promoted to "sekiwake," while Terunobori and Mitsuneyama, both "maegashira,"
have been elevated to "komusubi."
Because of his good showings in the previous tournament,
Shionoumi, promising "sekiwake," has newly been named "ozeki." Accordingly,
the number of "ozeki" grapplers in the West team increased to three, the
other two being Azumafuji and Maedayama.
In connection with the retirement of Akinoumi, "yokozuna,"
the chubby wrestler Terukuni has been made captain of the West team. Chiyonoyama
has been elevated to "sekiwake," jumping two positions from the rank of
"maegashira."
