Memorial Hall Rink Will Be Ready This Saturday

Eighth Army Special Services announces the opening of the Memorial Hall Indoor Ice Skating Rink on Saturday, Jan. 11. Operated by the 6th Special Service Co., Tokyo, this ice rink represents the first recreational  facility of this type in the Far East and rounds out the large list of sports possible in the Memorial Hall Arena.
On weekdays the rink will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. and from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays will see skating from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M., 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. Skates are available at Memorial Hall for those who wish to use the rink. However, it is suggested that personnel who have their own bring them.
There will be no dedication or ceremony at the opening of the rink Saturday night. However, the announcement added, ice shows and other special entertainment will be presented later.
Memorial Hall was formally dedicated to Americans who lost their lives during World War II by Maj. Gen. Clovis E. Byers, Eighth Army Chief of Staff, at the opening of the Inter-Command boxing tournament on Sept. 23, 1946.
Before the war, Memorial Hall was the site of the famous Japanese sumo wrestling matches. Each year thousands of enthusiastic Japanese swarmed to Tokyo from all parts of the islands to watch and compete in these affairs.
