Title To Haguroyama

Sumo Tournament Ends; Akinoumi To Quit Ring

    By winning all of his scheduled 13 matches, Haguroyama, "yokozuna" and captain of the West team, clinched the individual title in the autumn main sumo tourney, which wound up on November 18, at the Memorial Hall, Tokyo, after a 13 day series.
    With the pennant victory in the fall series, Haguroyama established himself the brilliant record of winning in two straight tournaments.
    Coming back strong in the latter half of the 13 day series, the West team won the inter-team competition by the total score of 146 points to 138. On the last day, the West camp overwhelmed the east squad 14 points to 7.
    Akinoumi, the 32 year old "yokozuna" of the East team, who had been absent in the autumn tourney due to malaria , formally retired from the ring on November 18 when his resignation was tendered to the Dai Nippon Sumo Association and approved by the association officials.
    After retiring from the ring, Akinoumi will render his efforts for the development of the sumo circles as an official of the association.
