New Sumo Rankings

Futabayama Quits Ring; Chiyonoyama Elevated

The Dai Nippon Sumo Association on October 25 at 6 a.m. announced the new rankings for its autumn main sumo tourney to be held for 13 days beginning November 6 at the Memorial Hall (formerly Kokugikan), Ryogoku, Tokyo.
By virtue of the East team's victory in the previous tourney held in November, 1945, no change was made in the position of both the East and West teams.
In the new rankings, the names of such formidable grapplers as Futabayama, "yokozuna"; Kasagiyama who has graduated from Waseda University, and Tamanoumi, head of the Nishonozeki Club, cannot be seen as they have resigned from the ring.
Prominent among those elevated in the East team were Terukuni, chubby "yokozuna," who was made captain of the squad in succession to Akinoumi, "yokozuna," and Shionoumi, who was promoted from the position of "komusubi" to "sekiwake" replacing Bishuyama.
Chiyonoyama, a promising wrestler, who won all of his matches in the previous tournament, was given the top position in the "maegashira" class, by advancing nine ranks.
In the West team headed by Haguroyama, "yokozuna" regarded as the king of Japanese sumodom, Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake," was re-installed "ozeki" in place of Saganohana, who was made "ozeki"-elect.
Fudoiwa was elevated from the position of "komusubi" to "sekiwake", while Futamiyama advanced 10 ranks to the first position of the "maegashira" class.
