Kyoto Sees Sumo

Hefty Grapplers Contest As Tourney Lifts Curtain

    KYOTO, April, 1 - April Fool meant serious business to 300 beefy Sumo wrestlers competing in the 10 day wrestling tourney which began today in the makeshift arena at Aburanokoji, Gojo, of this city.
    The present tourney marks the first Kyoto professional sumo tournament in eight years, and the wrestling fans of this city packed the arena in spite of the stringent financial situation. Sake bottles and geisha girls were noticeable here and there as the spring sunshine amicably all over the stadium. Elementary school children also attended in large groups.
    Futabayama, the premier Yokozuna grappler, did not compete - rumors have it that he is trying to save his "face" on the eve of his official retirement.
    The usual formality of purifying the ring with salt was eliminated.
