Foreign Newsmen See Sumo In Tokyo

A group of about a dozen foreign correspondents in Tokyo on Saturday, november 10, visited the Kokugikan Wrestling Arena, Ryogoku, Tokyo, and watched the Grand Champions Akinoumi and Haguroyama work out with their camps.
Starting out from Radio Tokyo at 9 a.m., the correspondents drove to the Kokugikan Arena where they were met by officials of the Japan Sumo Association. Immediately they were taken to the Akinoumi camp where they were met by the head of the camp, Kajinosuke Dewanoumi. Here they watched the Sumo great work out, such as Grand Champion Akinoumi and "Ozeki" Azumafuji.
Here they also met Toyonishiki, a rising contender who was born in Los Angeles and who is the only Nisei Sumo wrestler to reach the topnotch "Makuuchi" ranks. The Dewanoumi school also has another Nisei Sumo wrestler, Hironaka, a youthful strong boy who is looked on favorably.
The wrestlers, huge brawny men, sweated and grunted with enthusiasm in anticipation of the annual fall tournament which will begin November 16 for 10 days at the Kokugikan Arena.
After seeing mighty Akinoumi perform, the correspondents moved a couple of blocks away to the grounds of a burned out school where the Tachinami school headed by Grand Champion Haguroyama and other leading wrestlers including Nayoroiwa and Terunobori gave exhibitions of their strength.
Concluding the day's activity, the newspapermen visited the office of the Japan Sumo Association where they were greeted by Fujishima, former Grand Champion and now an official of the association.
