SUMO TOURNAMENT LOOMS
To Be Held in Meiji Shrine Outer Gardens From May 23
The annual summer sumo tournament this year will
be held at the Meiji Shrine Outer Gardens Wrestling Ring as a wartime recreation
for the people of the metropolis. With the opening ceremony taking place
on May 22, the first match is scheduled for May 23 with the tournament
continuing for one week.
The matches may be canceled or postponed with the
sounding of the raid alarms. However in view of the large seating capacity
of the Meiji Outer Gardens it is the plan to issue invitation tickets to
the great number of fans and others, allowing admission to only those in
possession of such.
At 3 p.m. on the day of the Boy's Festival on May
5, grand champion wrestler Terukuni, who has evacuated to Kamakura, prayed
at the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine for decisive victory in war following
which he coached school children of Kamakura and neighboring towns.
Also from 2 p.m. the same day a match in the open
was held by youthful fencers demonstrated their fighting spirit to down
the enemy.
